There are several tools available in order to build you website (html editors, Joomla, Drupal to name a few). While we have tried the vast majority of them and each tool has its own strengths and weaknesses there is one tool that clearly stands out, especially if you are new to building websites. We recommend WordPress, from the bottom of our hearts. WordPress is a completely free, yet very powerful system that enables you to build, design and manage your website. Moreover, you will soon discover that in order to build a fairly attractive and well-functioning website WordPress lets you do it without any previous technical knowledge or skills. Some computer experience will be helpful, but really it´s not a neccessity.
WordPress was initially intended purely for blog design, but the platform is flexible and nowadays you can construct virtually any kind of site with WordPress. You simply choose a design which is correspondent to your vision, and go with it. There are virtually thousands of designs to choose from and these designs are called “themes”. You are not really designing a site with WordPress, rather you are choosing a design (or a theme) to your liking. This design can then be altered to better suit your preferences and needs, but this may take some technical know-how. However, all of the features that are required to let you express your personality through your website are here. For example you can easily change the font size/style, the background colour of your website or the header image, in order to make the website your own.
Once you have installed and built your WordPress site, you may wish to fill it with quality content. This is very easy to accomplish in WordPress. It´s very easy to write posts or pages, to arrange them in the menu bar, to insert pictures, to manage visitor comments, or create a contact form. It´s also possible, although a bit more complicated, to build a site for e-commerce or a forum using WordPress. The possibilities are endless. And it is this easy-to-use flexibility coupled with some real firepower “under the hood” that has made WordPress the CMS of choice for so many people across the globe. A whopping 14,7% of the entire internet is now running on WordPress. Yep, you got it right. WordPress is not only massive, it´s an outright revolution. And the growth is there to support the hype. As of the end of 2011, 22% of all new websites went with WordPress. We know from experience they´ve made an excellent choice.
All you need in order to be able to build your site is any type of computer and internet access. You use WordPress through your browser, and it works across all platforms and devices. This allows you to do your website work in a highly flexible manner, and is one of many strengths that WordPress possesses. Let´s have a look at how easy it is to setup your WordPress site in part 5 of our guide.
